Which American pickle do you choose? | LA Streetfood

The topping that makes every American street food dish better

Which American pickle do you choose?

Which American pickle do you choose?

Pickles in America, you can’t miss them. During my visit to the United States, I saw them everywhere. On burgers, on hot dogs, in salads, in sauces… and yes, even in drinks.

Here we mostly know the sweet-and-sour pickle. In Russian salad. Or the way your mother used to serve them with drinks. But the American pickle is a completely different story. More bite. More sour. In American dishes, the right pickle really makes a serious difference.

And that is exactly what makes it so interesting for the hospitality industry. A small detail that allows you to stand out even more.

So… which American pickle do you choose?

TASTE THE AMERICAN PICKLE

Are American pickles really different?

Yes, actually they are. In the Netherlands, we are mainly used to sweet-and-sour pickles that are directly pickled in vinegar and sugar. This gives them the recognizable sweet-and-sour taste we know.

In America, it is often done slightly differently. There, pickles are often first placed in a brine of water and salt. This process creates fermentation. It gives the pickle a fresher, more sour flavor and helps it keep a firm, crunchy bite.

You can taste this difference especially well in dill pickles, the classic American burger pickle. They are less sweet than the pickles we are used to in the Netherlands and instead a bit more sour and herbaceous. That is exactly what makes them so suitable for American dishes.

How do American Dill Pickles taste?

The American dill pickle, also known as a dill pickle, is perhaps the most well-known American pickle.

These pickles are pickled in a brine of vinegar, salt, dill and often garlic. In America, they are so popular that you can even find dill pickle flavoured chips, popcorn and other snacks.

Dill pickles belong on the real American burger, just like the ones you eat everywhere in the United States. Think of the classic pickles on a McDonald's burger.

What makes them so suitable for burgers is their fresh and slightly sour taste. A burger is often fatty, creamy and sometimes even a little sweet because of the bun and sauce. The fresh acidity of an American dill pickle then provides exactly the right balance.

What is Pickle Relish?

In America, they love pickles so much that they even turned them into their own topping: sweet pickle relish. This is finely chopped pickle in a sweet-and-sour mix of pickle, vinegar and spices.

It is the taste of the American hot dog. One spoonful is enough to immediately give your bun more flavor. It also works well on burgers, where it forms a lightly sweet and fresh counterpart to meat, sauce and cheese.

In combination with other classic toppings, you immediately get that typical American street food feeling.

Original Fried Pickles (Fried pickles)

Yes, you read that right. In America, they fry pickles. And they do it a lot.

Fried pickles are a classic in bars and diners. Usually they are thin slices of dill pickle that are dipped in batter and fried until golden brown. These fried pickle slices are crispy on the outside and fresh and sour on the inside.

It may sound strange if you have never eaten them before, but the combination works surprisingly well. The crispy coating and the sourness of the pickle make them addictively delicious.

You will see them as a snack with dipping sauce, but also as a striking topping on a burger for extra crunch.

Which American pickle suits your dish?

Now that you know which types of American pickles there are, choosing becomes a lot easier.

Are you working with a burger that already has sweet elements, such as ketchup or a brioche bun? Then an American dill pickle is the perfect fresh counterpart.

Could your burger or hot dog use a bit more sweetness and richness? Then sweet pickle relish is a logical choice. Want something more striking, with crunch and a bit of American bar atmosphere? Then fried pickles are a strong addition.

The Dutch sweet-and-sour pickle is fine. Really.

But if you want a true American taste experience, choose one of these American pickles.
