Recipe: Japanese Style Hotdog
06 June 2025This hotdog doesn’t originate from Japan, but from Vancouver, Canada — the home of the iconic Japadog. What makes this style so special? It’s all about umami. Think of a juicy hotdog topped with sweet teriyaki sauce, creamy kewpie mayo, crispy nori, and dancing bonito flakes. A fusion bite that surprises every guest. We’ve slightly adapted the Japanese hotdog to make it super easy to prepare in the foodservice industry, using a one-step teriyaki-mayo blend.

Japanese Style Hotdog with teriyaki sauce and kewpie mayo for lunch menus and food trucks
Step-by-step preparation:
-
Make the sauce: Mix equal parts teriyaki sauce and kewpie mayonnaise to create a sticky, creamy topping.
-
Grill and caramelize: Grill the NYC Classic Hotdog until nicely browned. Sauté the onions next to it until soft and lightly caramelized.
-
Toast the bun: Lightly toast both sides of the Haute Dog Roll on the grill. Then slice the top open so the bun folds open for easy assembling.
-
Build the dog:
-
Place the grilled hotdog in the bun
-
Add the caramelized onions
-
Drizzle generously with teriyaki-mayo
-
Garnish with spring onion, nori, and bonito flakes
-
Optional: finish with sesame seeds
-
-
Serve immediately: Serve it on a wooden board with extra nori and spring onion on the side or straight out of hand for an authentic streetfood vibe.
